To add to what Anna has already said, answering your question will be easier if we know what app your husband used to make the recording. Recording apps in iOS are about a dime a dozen and the format to which they record and where those recordings are placed can vary widely. One of my favorite recording apps is Recup which used to be named DropVox. It allows recording directly into mp3 format and saves its recordings directly into the user's Dropbox folder which makes sharing extremely easy.
