Hi,

For the canadians on the list who haven't heard about this, it's time to thank
our CRTC for the latest ruling about unlocking fees.
First of all the article I just read on CBC News mentioned that the major
carriers collected over 37 Million in unlocking fees last year. That sounds
like a lot of money, but for the likes of Bell, Rogers and Telus this really is
not a lot especially if you more or less divide it evenly among them, a little
over 12 Million each.
Anyhow, the CRTC has ruled that as of December 1 carriers cannot charge a fee
for unlocking a phone and it actually goes further in that all new phones sold
after that date have to be unlocked. If of course you buy a phone on contract
this does not mean you can get out of said contract early without penelty, but
I wondered all along why carriers locked phones since with or without a locked
phone a contract is a contract.
Anyhow, it's a small victory and step in the right direction. We still have
some of the highest costs for cellular plans and data here in Canada although
our networks also rate among the best in the world. A lot of people complain
that nobody offers an unlimited plan, but I think it is only a matter of time
until that happens either because one carrier starts it which of course means
the others have to follow or maybe because the CRTC rules that carriers have to
offer unlimited plans. In that case they could of course make them so expensive
that nobody wants them, but I am a firm believer that 5, 6 or 8 years from now
we all look back and wonder how there ever was such as thing as a plan that was
limited to 2 Gb or that 3G really existed.
One thing we must also keep in mind is that we expect our carriers to provide
nationwide coverage and that in a country which is larger than the US including
Alaska and which has a total population that is less than that of California.

Regards,
Sieghard
