Donald, There is no 5S and whether Apple will call the new iPhone which most likely will come out in the fall of 2013 iPhone 5S is anybody's guess. Many people thought Apple might go away from numbers completely and just call the iPhone 5 the "new iPhone" because that is what they did in March with the iPad, everybody thought it would be called iPad 3, but they called it "the new iPad".
The just released iPhone 5 is in fact the sixth generation iPhone. Marianne was almost right: the first iPhone in 2007 was simply called "iPhone". Then in 2008 the iPhone 3G came along. In 2009 Apple released the iPhone 3GS and also the third generation iPod Touch and those were the first devices with Voiceover. In June of 2010 came the iPhone 4 which was physically different from the 3G and 3GS (those looked more like iPods with the rounded back) and the 4 and 4S were the more square and all glass models. In October of 2011 the iPhone 4S was released and now the iPhone 5. The major differences between the 4S from last year and the 5 this year is the size, the processor, the fact it supports LTE/4G data and the touch screen technology as well as dual band WiFi for both the 2.4 and 5 Ghz bands. It also has camera improvements but still uses an 8 MP sensor like the 4S. All iPhones prior to the 5 have had a 3.5 inch screen, the 5 has a 4 inch screen yet despite that it is 18% thinner and 20% lighter than the 4S and according to Apple it is once again the thinnest smartphone in the world.
