Hi David,

Hannah already pointed out that tun by turn is not available on the 3GS. I
am not sure what you mean that the update "includes iTunes". An iTunes app
has always been on the phone, this one is just updated. Whether you can
update via WiFi or not depends on whether you updated to iOS 5 since over
WiFi updating was not available in iOS 4.

I suggest you make sure you have the latest version of iTunes on your
computer, it is 10.7. Then plug in your iPhone, make sure you have done a
backup. Now turn off Bluetooth, double tap and hold the home button to bring
up the app switcher. Double tap and hold on one of the apps, now double tap
all apps in the app switcher until Voiceover says "App Switcher is Empty".
Next press and hold the power button until Voiceover says "Slide to shut
down", double tap anywhere on the screen and turn off your phone. Wait a few
seconds and turn it on again by pressing the power button. Now you are ready
to update.

Next go to "Devices" in iTunes on the computer and arrow down once to your
phone. Tab until you hear "Check for Updates" and press enter. iTunes should
tell you that the iOS 6 update is available, choose the "Download and
Install" option. Let iTunes do it's thing, the download can take half an
hour or maybe even more depending on your internet connection and the update
can take another 10 or 15 minutes. You will hear the Windows USB disconnect
and connect sound a few times and if you tab around in iTunes you will find
a place where it tells you what is currently happening. Once everything is
done your iPhone will automatically reboot and come back on with Voiceover.
The first screen may sound funny, maybe you hear another language, just
double tap to unlock. Now you have to double tap "Agree" on the iPhone to
agree to Apple's licence terms, then it will most likely ask you to enter
your Apple Id password for iCloud and Facetime/iMessage. That's it, you are
done.

It is not so difficult, iO/S 6 does have some nice new features although I
think there is more than just turn by turn that you are not getting having a
3GS. I think the VIP Mailbox feature is also not for the 3GS and I am not
sure if Do Not Disturb is, you would have to check Apple's website for that.

Regards,
Sieghard

Subject: ios 6 updating questions

I am hesitant to attempt the ios 6 update because i am not as tech savvy as
most posters on this list.
I have been using a iphone 3gs for over 2 years.
My understanding is that the new turn by turn maps will not work on my
device, am i correct in this?
Also, if I choose to update, I understand the update includes I tunes.
So, do I have to connect to my pc to do the update?
And a third unrelated question:
Often on this blog I see the terms "locked" and "unlocked" phones.
What do these terms mean?

Thanks
