Hi Jeb,
I'm now currently using aqua mail to send and receive emails, but
previously I was using the native Gmail app. To my best recollection, I am
definitely sure that you can receive notifications from the Gmail app
without having to open up the app and manually refreshing it. I don't have
the app in front of me at this present moment, but if you check with in
settings under notifications I believe, you turn those on and you should be
able to receive messages either while you're in other apps, or when your
screen is locked.
