That is probably a push notification that you have a voice mail. However, calls in the recent calls list actually have to be received by the phone and your phone can't receive calls when it's in Airplane mode or turned off. Voice Mails are kept on the carrier's server so that is different. If you have a mailbox in the lobby of your apartment building you can't receive mail if the outer door is locked, but that doesn't mean the mailman can't leave a note on the outer door that he tried to deliver mail to you, still that won't put it in your mailbox when you come home and find the note, he has to come back when the door is open to deliver it.
