Maybe eyes have to be open so nobody can take your phone and unlock it by pointing it at you while you are asleep.

If it were just facial recognition, why would it care if your eyes were open or closed? I know some totally blind people, myself included, who are sometimes told or asked, why do you have your eyes closed. When that happens to me, I honestly say I didn't realize they were closed. And opening them or at least when I guess is opening them feels entirely not natural. Fortunately, as the owner of a 7+, I do not feel the need to rush out for an upgrade.
