Kelly, I happen to prefer the table format for the ability to move up and down a column. On Sep 20, 2017, at 4:52 PM, KellyFord <ke...@kellford.com<mailto:ke...@kellford.com>> wrote:
Richard, Wendy and anyone else following this, Assuming MLB put all the info in this format, do you prefer this to a table? I’m asking because my personal opinion is decidedly mixed. For a casual read, this is better but at the expense of losing the ability to study a given column of data in detail. Suppose for example, the two pieces of info I know are missing were present around a team’s e-number and last 10 games and further that what you wanted to know was how a given team was doing currently. You’d check the last 10 games info. If the same info was exposed here that is still available visually, the string might be like the following: 2nd N L Central, Milwaukee Brewers, 80 Wins 70 Losses, 5 33 Winning Percentage, 4 Games Back, e-number 9, last 10 games 8-2. For one team you can still easily get the last 10 games data. But if you want to understand it for say all five teams in a given division you can no longer just read down that column. You would have to read the full entry for each team, keeping track of the last data for each team. So, what would be the guidance to developers about when to put data in a table versus not in your view? And would we be better served if VoiceOver had a way to read the full row with a single gesture and were able to keep data that is tabular in a true table? To be clear, when I first encountered this change, and ignoring the missing data, I liked it. I’m pretty sure MLB did this in response to feedback of some sort. But as I’ve tried to study some standings in more detail, I’ve come to miss the table more and more. I’m discussing this here as much to just get general impressions on this topic as the specific case. Now, if they had just included the other information in this format, to me, that would be perfection. Just my thoughts. Previously this used to be a table you could navigate with Voiceover and it was marked up for pretty solid accessibility. It did require you to move through several items for each team. For example one item might read w, 80 for the current team. The next would read l, 70. You could use the row setting to move down a column. In a recent update, the table has been eliminated and the standing information has been concatenated into a single string such as this: 2nd N L Central, Milwaukee Brewers, 80 Wins 70 Losses, 5 33 Winning Percentage, 4 Games Back The problem here is that now key information, that is still shown visually, has been left out. For example, a team’s win/loss record for the past 10 games and the number of games until a team is officially eliminated are now skipped. Ignoring the missing information, I’m curious if people have a preference for how this sort of information is communicated. The use of true tables for me allows for more rich exploration of the data, such as stepping down a given column. The concatenated approach, however, I suspect is more approachable for a wider population of users. Thoughts, Kelly -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list.
