That is correct, Richard, anything you deleted from when a thread was open in iOS 10 deleted the entire thread.

In iOS 11, you now have an option from within a thread to trash one individual message. At least, that is my understanding. I do not have anything running 10.3.3 to double check. While you are in a thread, and want to delete an individual message you just read, turn the rotor to actions, and one-finger swipe down to trash message.
