Hello Everyone,

NOTE 1:
The reason I am posting this is to alert those, who do not have enough
vision to see video display playback, to the fact that their iOS 11 screen
recordings may need some additional processing if they are to be viewed
correctly on non-Apple devices/platforms.

NOTE 2:
The following comments are based on my experience with an iPhone 6 S Plus
running iOS 11, a 6 Plus running iOS 10.33, and a Windows 7 PC.

NOTE 3:
It has long been established that for best results when taking photos/videos
on iPhone, in terms of insuring universal orientation compatibility, iPhone
should be held in landscape orientation. Simply put, if you hold your
iPhone in portrait mode when taking a photo/video, it will, most likely,
appear on it's side when viewed on a non-Apple device/platform.

Now, on to the Show:

I took a 2 minutes screen recording of my iPhone 6 S Plus. I held the phone
in portrait orientation which is the way I use the phone. Please note that
some apps, such as the one I chose to record, will not orient themselves to
landscape mode. Therefore, they can only be used in portrait mode.

Using Air Drop, I copied the video to my primary 6 Plus which I then
transferred to my Windows 7 PC via USB cable.

I was delighted to see that the file copied as a .mp4 file. I was not,
however, delighted to discover that, simply clicking the file, via Windows
Explorer, resulted in only the audio being played in Windows Media Player,
which is my default video playback application. That's right, there was no
video, whatsoever.

On my Windows 7 PC, I have QuickTime Player installed. Playing the file
from within QuickTime Player resulted in both the audio and video being
played and in the correct orientation.

Next, I sent the video from my 6 S Plus to my 6 Plus via iMessage. Upon
receiving the video file, I saved it to the 6 Plus's camera role from which
I transferred it to my Windows 7 PC via the USB cable.

This time, the file was transferred as a .mov file. Clicking the .mov file
from within Windows Explorer resulted in both audio and video playback in
Windows Media player but, as expected, the video was on its side.

Next, I opened the .mov file from within Quick Time Player and it played,
correctly.

Next, using Microsoft Movie Maker, I imported the .mov file and rotated it
90 degrees.

Next, I exported the file as a .mp4 file.

Finally, I clicked the newly created .mp4 file from within Windows Explorer,
and it played as expected with the correct video orientation, in Windows
Media Player.

It's interesting to note that the file I exported as a .mp4 file was less
than half the file size of the original video taken by the 6 S Plus, despite
the fact that it had identical video screen resolution.

In conclusion, if you are certain that your iOS 11 screen recording will be
displayed only on an Apple device/platform, then, all will be well. If,
however, you intend to have the recording played from within Windows, you
may want to alert the recipient to only play the file from within QuickTime
Player.

But, if you're like me, and you want virtual universal compatibility, such
as you would want if posting the video to the web, you will, at the time of
this writing, most likely need to perform some additional video processing
on the file.

Mark
