Hi Maria, Mary and craig, Craig is correct, the iPhone X has optical zoom for both back camera lenses. However, both the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus have optical image stabilization for the zoom lens, this is a difference to the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus and earlier where only the Plus models had optical image stabilization. The below is taken directly from the full phone specification page of the Apple website, it is after the section which lists differences and talks about specifications present in the 8 and 8 Plus which is what is meant by "both phones":
