When I get a message, if I'm quick, I can just tap the screen and it's available to read. If I'm not quick enough or doing something else, I have to open the notification center on the watch to read it. But it's often easy to get them by just tapping the face as if you were checking for the time. As far as I know, the face choice doesn't have any impact on this. But I think the only two faces worth using are simple and utility. So I'm probably not the one to ask about that.
