All the information is on the Sonos website. It’s basically exactly identical to a Play 1 but it has the microphones which allow you to speak to it after you have set up Amazon Alexa. You first have to figure out if Amazon Alexa is available which I am pretty sure it is not officially and if you can get around this and use it anyways. I know here in Canada people do use it even though even here it is not yet officially available. Apparently it might be coming soon here, but who knows. At some point during 2018 Sonos will add/enable the Google Assistant as well and this might be more widely available, it is already here in Canada even though Google came out way later with it than Amazon did with the Echo/Alexa. In the US the Sonos 1 costs the same as a Play 1 and I assume it may replace the Play 1 (if you don’t want voice assistants you just don’t have to set it up) so that is $199 USD. Here in Canada it is available now (as of October 24) and it costs $249 here which is pretty much the exchange rate difference which currently is about $1.20 CAD for 1 USD, multiply $200 by $1.20 and you get $240 so it’s pretty close.

If you have two systems you really like then the Chromecast method is worth considering and may work perfectly well for you. If you want to upgrade to something more modern, something which is expandable and now with the Sonos 1 speaker something which gives you access to several voice assistants (when they are done with what they are doing) then Sonos is still the system of choice in my opinion. With Sonos you also don’t use your phone’s resources, you simply use the phone and Sonos app as a remote control. You get access to just about every music service there is including Apple Music and the sound quality is awesome. The new Sonos 1 speaker is available now and fully supports Alexa, the Google Assistant will be added I think in early 2018 and I assume they will also integrate Cortana since Microsoft certainly is going the third-party route. SIRI will take longer, but it the voice assistants will not work here because they require a speaker with microphones and this is simply a hardware constraint. I also assume that the Sonos 1 is just the start and that a Sonos 3 and Sonos 5 or whatever they will be called are following to give customers the full choice of speaker quality and still include voice assistants. In some cases I have bought new technology when it comes out, but I’m glad I was reluctant to jump onto the smart speaker train because I’d kick myself if I had bought a Amazon Echo and/or Google Home speaker where now I can buy a Sonos 1 which can do them all. The Sonos 1 by the way also supports Airplay 2 so even if you already have a bunch of older equipment adding one of them allows you to Airplay to any of your Sonos speakers since that is how Sonos works. The audio only Chromecast plugs into a 3.5mm port so you can connect it to any powered speaker which has a 3.5mm input port and you can easily connect it to an older analogue stereo with a 3.5mm to RCA cable. The video version, either the regular Chromecast or the Chromecast Ultra which supports 4K streaming only have HDMI ports so unless you have a newer receiver with HDMI inputs this one wouldn’t work for just music/audio on a system where HDMI is not available. You can connected to an existing stereo and get good sound. Lots of absence support casting, even on iOS, with the sad exception of Apple Music, of course. I wish they get their head out of their whatever and just realize that not everybody has airplay or wants to buy whole new stereo or new speakers to get airplay. I still have it because I have old airport expresses. But they are really old I mean really old, and they don't make more. The good thing about casting audio is that, once you have made the connection, the phone isn't doing the work anymore. You can still skip songs etc. on the phone, but the phone isn't losing as much battery as it would otherwise. At least that's been my experience. Chromecast audio versus air play through the same stereo with the same phone. And if you happen to have two stereos, you can use one chrome cast to set up a group and play all of your music through both at the same time, that's giving you music on two separate floors or throughout the house or whatever. Again, it's just puts lots of new life into older equipment and makes it totally unnecessary to spend hundreds and hundreds if you want this kind of set up. . For example, if you have a regular Chromecast or a 4K capable Chromecast Ultra connected to your TV and you have Netflix on your iPhone, you can pick a movie or show in the app on your phone, send it to the Chromecast and at that point the Chromecast which is of course connected to your WiFi streams the content and you could actually completely turn off your iPhone and the movie would still continue to play/stream. You can not save any music or other media to a Chromecast. Your TTS is not sent over.
