I haven’t been asked to enter a code.  I just saw the message that my IPhone 
number could be used.  Still confused, but getting clearer I think.  Thanks for 
the info.

Hi Paula,

 

If you're being asked to enter a code, you probably already turned on 
two-factor authentication. You won't need to enter a code when making 
purchases; you just do it when you add a new device to your account, or when 
accessing sites like the Apple ID one. It's a way of establishing that it's 
really you who are trying to access the account because the six-digit code is 
sent to a device you own, and the device has to be unlocked for you to be able 
to read the message. So when you try to add your phone to your account and you 
are asked to choose a device, choose your phone number. The code will be sent 
as a text message. Enter that code, and you should be all set.

So it sounds like I have to go into settings and turn on two factor 
identification before it’s activated.  I read the information from the link 
provided in the email.  So, do I need to provide both the usual password and 
the two factor identification code when I purchase an app.  I guess I’m really 
dense, but I don’t quite understand.  Thanks and sorry for my confusion.

Choose to have the code sent to your phone. It's possible that it will then be 
entered automatically. If us isn'!, you'll get a text message with a six-digit 
code. Type the code into the six blanks, and you should be all set.

from apple that I had activated two factor authentification.  I don’t remember 
doing so when I updated, and haven’t received the 6 digit number they talked 
about as far as I right now know.  I did see a notice that I could use my 
IPhone number for the two factor identification. Could someone please explain 
in clear, simple terms how or when I might use it. I’m not the most computer
