I'd like to also recommend the book, Get The Picture by Judi Dixon available from the National Braille Press. She is blind and while some of the information is out of date, the techniques are not. She worked with a (or several, I can't remember right now,) photographer to learn how to get good pictures, both for object identification and just plain photographs.

If you have somebody there who can see what you are pointing the camera at and who also knows what you want to point it at then they can correct you and in time you hopefully get a better feel for it.
