As was pointed out, size refers to the diagonal screen size, one watch is 38mm 
and the other is 42mm, a difference of 4mm. This may not sound like much, but 
when you actually try the watches on you will definitely notice the 42mm watch 
feels quite noticeable larger and also a bit thicker.

The main difference between series 2 and 3 is a faster processor and the fact 
that the seris 3 watch has a built-in LTE modem. You can activate it on your 
iPhone plan, in the States I believe it is an extra $10 a month,if you pay this 
then the watch can receive and make phone calls independent  from the iPhone, 
i.e. you don’t have to have your iPhone with you but you can still make a call.
There are a number of limitations I believe, not totally sure.
