This too would be my hands down preference. But maybe I’m just the Charlie
Brown of Vox scales…

The two units I currently have are my third replacements on each. They’re both
sitting on my desk waiting to be packed or dumped. I still have to reach out to
My Weigh. The note I got with these two units was where I was informed that
these would be my last exchanges. I did have some previously, but the first
one, I couldn’t find the warranty card and my wife chucked it. Of course after
doing so, we found the warranty card. The second time, the Vox II that I tried
died within two weeks of getting it and I didn’t feel like hassling so I just
did the straight Amazon return. That was when I thought I would be slick and
get two figuring that I’d have two scales so I’d always have a backup…

This most recent time, the first scale lasted me almost four months. It started
giving me crazy readings like 3564 grams no matter what I put on it around two
weeks ago. Then it started giving me the beep of death. I figured ok… I’ve got
the second one. I’ll just use that till the holidays pass… The second one… … …
lasted me five days before the same thing happened.

As I didn’t want to be left without a scale for a month even if My Weigh would
do the return, I went ahead and ordered another talking scale which should get
here tomorrow, but in the meantime, I came across that article and out of
frustration I thought about giving those smart scales I mentioned a try.

I use the scale for measuring things like coffee beands and water. Greek
yogurt. Basic things like that. I keep it in a zip lock bag to avoid getting it
wet. Again, maybe I’m just cursed.

Anyway… These smart scales in general seem like major overkill since at least
for me, my wants are simple. But maybe it can be an option.

I saw this particular one had a flash sale going on earlier for $20 down from
$50.

I went ahead and grabbed it. I think it went back up to $50, but I figured for
$20, I’d give it a try.

I downloaded the associated app and while everything looks accessible, nicely
labeled, no odd buttons or inaccessible fields, Only when I pair the app with a
scale, I’ll see about the actual measuring/weighing aspect.

My Vox 3000 lasted me about 20 years and when it gave up the ghost recently I
saw online when I was looking for a new scale that My Weigh, the maker of the
Vox talking scales, has a 30-year warranty. I contacted them and they referred
me to a company called “Canadian Weigh” in Vancouver here in Canada. I had no
proof of purchase or warranty card any more, but all I had to do is send in the
defective scale and a $25 money order to cover shipping and they sent me a
brand new Vox-2 scale. I would call that great customer service and also feel
that 20 years was plenty of lifespan, let’s see how long the new one will last.
The Vox-2 by the way is accurate to 1 gramm.

I like connected devices but there is something to be said for the simplicity
of a scale which just speaks the weight as you put stuff on it.

If each time I wanted to weigh something I had to unlock my phone and all that
I would probably find that too much interaction.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Those Vox scales are crap. I had one die on me a month or so ago. So
frustrating!

I did buy another talking scale though I need to look up the brand. it was a
bit more expensive than the vox scale but seems to be more durable, at least so
far. I too would be interested in knowing how accessible are the commercially
available blue tooth kitchen scales.

If you are interested I will find out the name of the scale I have and post it.

Hello list,

I was wondering if anyone’s had experience with any smart kitchen scales and
whether they’ve found any of their accompanying apps to be VoiceOver accessible?

I read this San Francisco Chronicle article on smart appliances and how in
general they’re not catching on:
https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Smart-kitchen-appliances-not-catching-on-yet-12453777.php

However, one thing that was mentioned aside from the popular instant pot which
has been brought up on a lot of blindness related lists and many of us in fact
have, are smart kitchen scales.

I currently use the My Weigh Vox 3000 talking kitchen scales and while the Vox
scales are pretty accurate and can measure to the gram, they’re always breaking
down on me. My Weigh supposedly offers something like a twenty year warranty,
but seriously, a scale lasts me around three and maybe four months if I’m
lucky. This last time I sent my two scales in for replacements, I got a note
back saying that this would be the last exchange they would be making. Not to
mention that you have to pay for shipping. That and unless you’ve got more than
one scale, you’re out of luck for the approximate three to four weeks it takes
for the turnaround from sending it out to getting a working unit back.

Gripes with My Weigh durability and their crappy warranty response, I’ve been
looking for an alternative. Unfortunately, for standalone talking scales,
they’re really the only game in town. At least if you want to the gram accuracy
anyway.

In any event, I came across a few “smart” kitchen scales on Amazon.

This:

 &qid=1514234018&sr=8-3&keywords=Smart+kitchen+scale and

 &qid=1514234018&sr=8-5&keywords=Smart+kitchen+scale and

 &qid=1514234018&sr=8-8&keywords=Smart+kitchen+scale

Has anyone had experience with any of these scales and again, do they know if
their accompanying iOS apps are VoiceOver accessible? I’m probably going to
reach out to these companies directly, but thought I’d touch bases in case
anyone’s already using them in their kitchen.

Ideally, I’d like to continue to use a simple standalone talking kitchen scale,
but considering that each Vox scale can go from $30 to $50 or more depending on
where and when you buy them. Not to mention the cost of shipping when you have
to send them in to be fixed/replaced. Spending a few bucks more for a bluetooth
connected one becomes a way more attractive option.

Thanks,

Cristobal
