Harry, I find double tapping in the message box to move insertion point at start is the easiest way to begin such an editing session. You can double tap within the text box where the text is being entered to jump between moving the insertion point at the top or bottom of the message. When at the top, turn the rotor until you hear words and single finger swipe down until you hear the problem word. You can then turn the rotor to characters and single finger swipe until the character you need to delete is announced. After that announcement, the insertion point is to the right of the character last spoken and pressing the delete key will delete it.
