That little cable probably has a 3.5mm femal audio plug on the one end, you would use it if you want to use a regular 3.5mm headset with your iPhone 8 which doesn’t have a 3.5mm headphone port anymore. The earpods which came with your iPhone are Lightning Earpods, same as before, but instead of a 3.5mm plug they now have a lightning plug and you plug them directly into the Lightning port. I would definiitely invest in some sort of wireless charging pad, you can get fairly inexpensive ones on Amazon or get the one from Apple although I am not sure if it’s out yet, I think it should be coming soon, though, this one charges faster and allows you to charge multiple devices, e.g. if you have Airpods or an Apple Watch you could charge your phone, watch and Airpods all at the same time. I would probably buy some basic charging pads, though, because if I had an iPhone 8/8 Plus or iPhone X I would want to have a charging pad next to my bed, one in my office and at least one more in the living room or kitchen.
