Hi Alan,

After doing some readingabout this app I have 1 question. Does this
keyboard have a shift key for capitalizing letters? I didn't catch anything
about this. Thanks much.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Subject: Fleksy VO Coming Back as FlickType

Hello,

I'm posting this to both viphone and iDevices.

Those of you who ever experienced the original Fleksy app later renamed
Fleksy VO will be excited to learn that the app is coming back renamed
FlickType. Those who don't know what I'm talking about should sign up as
beta testers of FlickType and give it a go and submit your feedback. You can
visit its website at www.flicktype.com where there is a link to submit an
email to sign up as a beta tester.

The original Fleksy which was released about 2012 came out when Apple did
not allow third party keyboards. It was a separate app that presented a
keyboard at about a third of the bottom of your iPhone screen in portrait
mode. The keys were oversized in a high contrast presentation for those with
any vision and there was no spacebar. Any content produced with Fleksy had
to be copied and pasted into whatever app you wanted to send the text in
such as your Mail or Messages app. FlickType continues in the same vein
since it uses the original Fleksy source code which went into the public
domain after Pinterest acquired the Fleksy Keyboard and the original Fleksy
VO was no longer supported.

What is great about FlickType is its predictive engine. You simply start
typing where you think the keys you want are located and do a single finger
swipe right when you're done. FlickType will announce the word it thinks you
wanted and more times than not will get it right. If it's not right, simply
do a single finger swipe down to cycle through its other choices. These
choices are all presented audibly and when you hear the correct one, you
just start typing the next word. You don't need to insert any spaces since
FlickType does that automatically. When you type the last word in the
sentence and FlickType has announced it, simply single finger swipe once
again and FlickType will place a period at the sentence end. You simply
start typing the next word and FlickType will automatically capitalize it.
Only letter keys are presented on the main FlickType keyboard which makes it
very easy to rapidly type your text with only a single finger. To access
other keys such as numbers or symbols, you do a 2 finger swipe right or left
to cycle through these. To capitalize a letter such as a proper name, single
finger swipe down after you've entered the letter and it will be
capitalized. Any words or names you enter manually can be added to your
custom dictionary by doing a single finger swipe up after FlickType
announces the word. Developing a complete dictionary is highly recommended
since that is what feeds FlickType's predictive engine. When your typing is
done, do a 2 finger swipe up to access the FlickType menu where your text is
reviewed for you and you can access the menu choices to copy it for pasting
in the app where you want it to go. It is very easy to learn and I strongly
recommend those unfamiliar with it to try it since sometimes there is just
no substitute for typing even though dictation is very handy.

The FlickType developer who is the original Fleksy developer as I understand
it has said they hope to have a FlickType iOS keyboard at some point.
Personally, I'm not too fussed about whether they ever do this since my
experience with Fleksy was that it became much less usable and efficient in
my opinion once it became an iOS keyboard. I find that even with the
FlickType separate app and having to copy and paste its output as was the
case with Fleksy VO that I can still output text much more quickly than with
either the standard iOS keyboard or with the Fleksy keyboard.

Here is a link to the AppleVis site announcing Fleksy becoming the latest
inductee into the AppleVis App Hall of Fame for those wanting to review a
little history:

https://www.applevis.com/blog/ios-apps-advocacy-applevis/fleksy-becomes-latest-inductee-applevis-ios-app-hall-fame

I wish David Woodbridge's excellent podcast on the original Fleksy app was
still available on AppleVis but apparently it no longer is due to its age.

For those interested in signing up as beta testers of FlickType, go to the
website previously mentioned. You'll have to install TestFlight on your
device which is required to beta test iOS apps but I think you'll find the
effort well worth it. You'll be given access to the FlickType app where you
can start learning and using it.
