Nearby Explorer is not fully functional in the UK as yet. I contacted them two weeks ago and they say they are building a UK version. When it comes out I will probably buy it as it looks like it does what I want.
I have got the Nearby Explorer Online version, which shows what it will be capable of, but currently does not do turn by turn instructions or link to public transport etc. In the US it downloads all maps to your phone, so you need a fair bit of free space, but it does mean you use less power and data when out and about.
