Hello Apple Accessibility Team, Malcolm and Ioana,
I CC Apple Accessibility on this message thread from the Viphone list. This is regarding the Apple Watch series 2 and how ever since Watch OS 4 was released using the watch is a bit of a painful experience since it has become very sluggish, Voiceover sometimes lags and in general changing watch faces, opening apps and so on is slow and noticeably worse than before. I am almost sure that sighted users have a better experience since they don't have Voiceover running which uses up some of the processing power and respources. My wife also has a series 2 and I rarely hear her complain and she can do things much more quickly compared to me doing the same thing on my watch. I feel the accessibility team should report this to the watch team if it hasn't already been done and lobby for future Watch OS upgrades to do a better job supporting the older hardware. As my fellow Viphone list member Ioana pointed out in her post below, Apple should not update Watch OS to work well with the latest version of the Apple Watch and expect users to buy a new watch every couple of years. It used to be that a good and expensive watch was more of an investment than a purchase and in some cases watches lasted lifetimes. I of course understand that a piece of technology like the Apple Watch is far removed from those types of watches, but I think Apple has a responsibility towards customers to support such hardware for a minimum of 5 or 6 years and ensure that software updates don't result in the watch being so slow that it's an unpleasant experience to use it. If this is the case I will certainly think twice or maybe trice about buying another Apple Watch. When I upgraded to Watch OS 4 I noticed the same slow down and sluggishness and eventually did a full reset setting up the watch as a new device afterwards. I also turned off the option for apps to be installed automatically on the watch and only installed what I really want and use on the watch. I must admit that for me it's primarily a workout/fitness device, yes, I check messages or an email on it here and there, use it to unlock my Schlage Sense front door lock and occasionally when my phone is plugged in and charging and I'm elsewhere in the house I may take a phone call on it. Anyhow, I found doing the reset and setting it up as a new device with just a small amount of apps helped, it is again somewhat more responsive although it is still not as good as it once was and hopefully Watch OS 5 will once again improve the speed on older hardware and not make it even worse. I will certainly not upgrade to Watch OS 5 this fall until I hear reports as to how the performance is on a series 2 watch. Hello, In my experience the short answer to your question is no. When I updated my series two watch from OS3 to 4 I noticed the slowdown that you describe. Setting up the watch as a new device did not improve the situation. Unfortunately I know of no way of downgrading an OS on a watch. Perhaps our only hope will be Watch OS5?
