Everything you should know about Apple's SE2

By Kevin Downey, Komando.com

Do you like secrets? Do you love seeing new tech devices long before your
family and friends do?

Well, if you're an Apple diehard fan, you know the story. Apple has a way of
leaking specs and photos of upcoming iPhones months before they hit store
shelves, or at least Apple fuels the flames of the rumor mill.

Rumors start to get wilder and louder before they eventually settle down
into something resembling the truth. That phase is usually a few weeks or
months before an official announcement.

If you haven't heard, we're in that stage now with iPhone SE 2 rumors.
Speculation for Apple's lower-cost, fewer-frills iPhone have been wild and
fiery for the past few weeks.

Now, this is what most analysts and Apple insiders know (or believe) about
the iPhone SE 2. The phone is a pretty impressive update of the
4-inch-display iPhone SE that was released a couple of years ago, if rumors
are to be believed.

SPECS

Apple's iPhone X is its top-of-the-line iPhone with its newest features,
like 3D facial recognition and a 5.8-inch display. The iPhone SE 2 is a
basic smartphone with fewer bells and whistles.

Yet, it's a pretty impressive phone, if these spec rumors prove to be true.
It's expected to run on Apple's latest operating system, iOS 11.

The SE 2 will also use Apple's A10 Fusion chip. The current iPhone SE uses
the A9.

The iPhone SE will have 2G of RAM, according to people in the know. It will
come with two storage options, 32GB and 128GB.

THE BELLS AND WHISTLES

The current SE has an aluminum back. The SE 2 will likely have a glass back,
like the new iPhones.

That most likely means it will have wireless charging. However, it will keep
the older iPhone feature, a 3.5 mm headphone jack - Apple's new iPhones
don't have that.

CAMERA

The SE 2 has pretty impressive cameras. It will have 12MP for its rear
camera, comparable to the iPhone X, but a 5MP front-facing camera - the X
has 7MP.

PRICE

The SE 2 is an affordable smartphone, certainly compared to iPhone 8 and
iPhone X. The 8's starting price is $699 while the X starts at $999.

The SE 2's rumored price tag is $450. That's quite inexpensive and puts it
right in line with the cost of some refurbished iPhones.

TOUCH ID

The iPhone SE, the one currently available, uses Apple's fingerprint
biomtetrics Touch ID as a security measure. There were rumors that the SE 2
would upgrade to iPhone X's 3D technology, but Apple insiders say SE 2 will
stick with Touch ID.

RELEASE DATE

The big question surrounding the iPhone SE 2 is its release date. There are
a couple of things to note here.

Apple typically announces new releases in June and then at its big annual
hardware event in September. But the SE 2 isn't likely to be Apple's big
release this year.

This is a lower-cost, fewer-frills smartphone that Apple might release a
little bit under the radar. In fact, its target audience is likely to be the
international market.

So, what does that mean? The current rumor is that it will be released soon,
before summer.

That rumor is gaining steam with the increasing number of leaked SE 2
photos. The rumors about the SE 2 are starting to come into a consensus,
which is a good sign something's about to be announced.

Yet, other rumors say the SE 2 will not be released until this summer. Other
reports even push its release all the way back to next year, 2019.
