I don't journal myself but you might take a look at Drafts 5.0. It has both free and subscription versions and from what I can tell, the free version is pretty powerful. The files it creates are saved in txt format so you would be able to access them easily with computers and other devices. It can save to Dropbox and other cloud services and also has an option to append to a journal file if you so choose. I'm not sure what dedicated journal apps provide but unless I'm missing something, I'm thinking this is pretty much creating text and Drafts has a lot of powerful features to do so and you might want to play around with it. AppleVis has a fairly recent podcast on Drafts so you might also check that out. Good luck.
