Hello Marie,

If I understand your question correctly you are referring to external battery 
packs that you can use to charge your phone.  You would use one or these 
exactly as you would use any other charger so whether your phone is in a case 
does not matter.

Personally I use Anker battery packs.  These are available from Amazon and come 
in a variety of capacities and sizes.

The rule of thumb I use when choosing a battery pack is that you take the MAH 
value of your phone’s battery multiply this by 1.5 and this should charge your 
device once.  So my iPhone has a battery of 2000 MAH for example so a 3000 MAH 
will give me around a single charge.
