Well, I've had my keyboard for over a year and have not needed to change batteries. Have you opened the battery compartment? The batteries might be in it, but with a plastic strip preventing them from draining. Richard

If you haven't found out how to pair it yet, once the batteries are in, the slide switch needs to be slid away from the battery compartment. Then, go to the bluetooth settings on your device and make sure you know which position the dial for selecting devices is where you want it. Then, press and hold the button on the far right just below the slot for the iPad. There are two retangular buttons, the iOS device one is the far right. Hold it for several seconds and the K480 keyboard should show up on your device, double tap it when it does and they wil pair. No codes required. The keys on the bottom row from left to right are: control, function, options, command, spacebar, command, options, left arrow, down arrow, right arrow. Note that the up arrow is the top half of the down arrow. If you press VO+K you will be in keyboard help/practice mode. You can confirm the rest of the keys that way. Just be aware that some of the keys on the function key row at the top will kick you out of practice mode and you will have to go back into it to continue.
