Hi all, Thanks for your suggestions. On Apple support advice we reset device settings and this restored Voiceover to normal working. Thankfully we didn't have to do a full restore which would have been the case if Voiceover had been corrupted in some way. I was quite surprised how little had to be done afterwards to restore full functionality, all the apps retained their login status.
