Tom, This is all pretty good advice, but here are a few things nobody mentioned:
1. What are you currently paying and who is your carrier? 2. If you were to upgrade as others pointed out, going from a 7 to an 8 is a waste of money especially since I assume there would be some sort of cost involved. If there is absolutely no cost, e.g. you can give your iPhone 7 back and get an 8 then I would do it, I mean, why not, you get a new phone with 1 year of warranty and unless you bought Apple Care Plus your iPhone 7 warranty is now done. 3. If there is a cost involved and the iPhone 7 is now yours and off contract, why not ask your carrier to unlock it and try to find a plan that is cheaper either from T-Mobil or with one of the other MVNO's like Straight Talk, Consumer Cellular etc. yu guys in the States have dozens of choices and you might find a plan which suits you for $30 which I assume is a lot less than what you pay now, but again, it all depends on what you pay now. But consider this: if you pay $70 now and you can save $40 by going to an MVNO then you save $480 in one year, keep your iPhone 7 for another year until the fall of 2020 and you save $9960 which would mean if you put that money into a savings account in two years you would have enough to buy whatever brandnew and most likely high-end phone is being offered outright and you could simply continue to use it on your inexpensive plan. Us that phone for 4 years and you save another bundle. I used to upgrade every two years as well and I upgraded my first iPhone, the 4, after only 1 year to the 4S because it had SIRI and I really wanted SIRI at the time. However, nowadays these devices are mature, new features often are not these incredible advancements and of course they can't be. Every so often something revolutionary comes along and for a few years it may continue to change at a fast pace, but eventually it has to slow down. Almost every year you read articles about how Apple has lost its way and its edge because they released another line-up of phones which are just relatively minor upgrades from last year's model and it's all just "evolutionary" and not "revolutionary" to use the jargon that is being used. I mean da, what do people expect? It's not like new Samsung or Google phones knock your socks off these days, eoither, that is just how it is with technology. I think many consumers are starting to realize that there is no real benefit in upgrading their $1,000 or more phone every year or two, here in Canada given our exchange rate the iPhone XS Max with 512Gb of storage costs $1,999.99. Really, 2000 bucks for a phone (that does not include the 12% taxes we have here in British Columbia, only 5% in Alberta, but in some provinces it's even more than 12%), so if I bought a new XS Max with 512Gb it would cost me $2,240 and if I wanted Apple Care Plus I think that's another $200 so I'd pay almost $2,500 for that phone unless of course I go on a 2-year contract but even then this top of the line phone with Apple Care Plus would cost probably almost $1,000 canadian. I'm sorry, but no thanks. My advice is that if an upgrade to an iPhone 8 costs you even $50 more than what you currently pay then don't do it, go and find an inexpensive planand save some money for a year or two, then upgrade. I have a 6S Plus, I had Apple put a new battery in for $35 a few months ago and now with iOS 12 the phone probably works just as good or better as it did when I first bought it 3 years ago with iOS 9 preinstalled.
