If your monthly bill goes up that much then it’s not a free upgrade, it’s just
phrasing it in a way which says we won’t charge you x amount of dollars for the
upgrade instead we charge you more every month for 2 years. If your bill would
go from $68 to $100 then please don’t do this. That is $32 a month more over 24
months which means you will pay $768 for this iPhone 7 which you can buy
outright for $769 here in Canada and that is with 128Gb, if what they are
offering you is a 32Gb then you can buy that from Apple for $629.
I am with Koodo which is an MVNO owned by Telus and I am on a Quebec plan which
gives me unlimited phone calls in Canada and unlimited texting as well as 6Gb
of data for $49 before tax.
You would be much better of to switch to something like that, it would save you
$19 a month, then put that plus the $32 you are considering to pay extra for
the upgrade Telus is offering into a savings account, a total of $51 a months.
In one year you will have put aside $612 and if you go a bit longer than that
you can buy a brandnew iPhone next year outright and continue with your $49 a
month plan. I know this takes some diciplin since you really do have to put
that money aside and not touch it, but if you paid Telus $100 a month you would
not have this money, either. If you want I can help you with getting on that
Koodo plan, there are people you can find online who do it for you for a $50 or
sometimes more payment, I wouldn’t want any money, but I have done it for
myself, my wife, my mother and one of my employees and he in turn has now done
it for his wife. The good thing is that even if your phone is locked to Telus
which most likely it is, it will work with Koodo since Telus owns them. Of
course since December 1 last year Telus also would have to unlock your iPhone
at no charge if you want that.

Sieghard

Hi Mich,

How much do you pay per month and who is your carrier? Read my message to Tom
regarding switching to a lower cost carrier like Koodo here in Canada. In your
case with an iPhone 6 I would say going to an iPhone 7 wouldn’t be such a bad
thing especially if your OK with what you are paying and if that monthly
payment doesn’t change. Also, if you were on a 2-year contract which is now
paid off you should be able to keep your iPhone 6 which means after you get
your iPhone 7 you can probably sell it and still get $100 for it or maybe even
a bit more if it has a larger storage capacity, e.g. if it’s at least a 64Gb
then maybe you could ask $150..

Hi all. I recently was contacted by my phone company to upgrade my phone. I am
using a eye phone 6 and they said that I could get a eye phone 7 for 0 dollers.
Since I have payed off my phone I am wondering what others thoughts are? Since
my phone is working fine right now for what I use it for witch is mainly
texting, e mail, kik, fb messenger etc. From Mich.

Hi Tom,

This is all very good advice. I also advise my clients similarly. Unless the
new models have something that you absolutely must have, I would stick with
your iPhone 7 and wait till next year to see what Apple offers up. I am
currently using an iPhone 7 running the iOS 12 beta and it’s working just fine.
