Well, thanks everyone for letting me know about itunes. As usual, my wife was right in saying I probably shouldn't upgdate just yet, smile. Through heroic effort, I got my system trestored to an early Friday afternoon restore point and itunes 12.8.something came back. There used to be a button on the itunes screen labeled "activity popover" which is now labeled "disc selector button". Go Figure.
