I readily recall when a telephone was designed and manufactured to survive all but a nuclear blast. In fact, one of the first quite interesting bits of information I learned when I first began working at AT&T Bell Labs was that the company had a concrete platform at the base of a 10 story building in New Jersey; that concrete platform was used as a proofing ground for new AT&T telephone designs. A prototype telephone would be repeatedly dropped from the 10th story onto the concrete platform until it continued to function properly after that 10-story fall. Times, and customer expectations, certainly have changed over the past 60 or so years. And, yes, I understand that these smart phones do so much more than the old POTS telephones. But ultimately, I believe that the principle purpose of having a phone of any kind is to make telephone calls.
