Okay that does explain the problem and yes, the swiping down to View does
work. The two I was using did not have the passcode enabled at the moment. I
had turned it off while doing the updates.

Apparently, if you have a pass code, the messages will properly open
from the lock screen.
If you do not have a pass code, they will not open.
One way I have found to get around this annoying bug is to flick down
to View while the notification is highlighted.
