I think that's something that sighted people like to use so that they can glance at the screen when an alert comes in. I've always had mine off.

Hi all,
with my new phone raise to wake is on. Previous iPhones I have owned I have not
had that turned on. Is there any reason not to turn it off? I notice sometimes
when it is in my pocket and if I squat down to do something it will turn on.
Thanks once again for any ideas.
Max.
