Hi Tom,

I had the exact same issue with a swollen battery causing the separation on the 
left side of the screen. A trip to the Apple Store in Northridge resulted in a 
free replacement phone. You might want to give that option a try, if nothing 
else, you can always use that new phone as a trade-in for the newer model.
