Mary, I am able to delete e-mails, voice mails, Bookmarks in Safari, and text messages using the Actions option. It was selected by default on my 4S when I downloaded iOs4.
You have probably already done this, but to set it up go to . Settings General Accessibility VoiceOver on Rotor. Actions is one of the items you can select. I cannot tell you specifically where because I have reordered all of the items on my rotor. I suppose it's possible that it is missing on your download?
