The activity app does count your steps. I usually access this information on the activity app on my phone. For example, I have walked 3,810 steps today totaling 1.81 miles. In the activity app, I look at history and make sure today is selected. Then go to the bottom of the screen and swipe left and steps is normally the first thing.
