When going through the options of requesting a ride, you should be presented with a screen where you choose what kind of ride you want. This is where you double tap on the Uber Pool item. The price and ride time will be updated, and you hit the select or go button at the bottom. I forget what Uber calls it since I mostly use Lyft these days. In Lyft when making a request, I select the Shared item which is usually already selected, and then hit the select shared button at the bottom.
