Hi Robert, I experience similar results.
Try tapping the "messages" button after you open the app. I could not find the messages button by exploring the phone screen. To find it, first locate the settings button on the top left, then flick left once, and you'll see it. Alternatively, go to top of screen by touching with four fingers towards the top half of the screen. That should land you on the messages button.
