I would say that the calendar takes a little fiddling to get it to work, but it is worth the trouble.
As for the notifications, go into notification settings and find the calendar; you can change how the phone lets you know about alerts there. My only frustration with the calendar is that focus seems to jump around when you are trying to enter something. But it has proved very useful in keeping track of my typical older-lady round of appointments and such.
