It is not only Apple that is done with the home button, many Android phones
also don't have one any more and quite a few models are starting to also have
no 3.5mm headphone jack any more.

and general usability?

I enjoy my Iphone XR, not having a home button takes a little getting used to
but once you master the new gestures, it's just as easy. There are a couple of
other differences, for example the dictate option is in a different place on
the screen, over all though it's a nice phone. It does seem that Apple is done
with the home button so everyone will need to get used to the new way of doing
things moving forward.
