With the system that I gather is called Visual Voicemail, covering the top of the phone and uncovering it or pulling it away from your head does nothing with Voicemail now. Quite irritating. That used to work fantastically well. And, to have the speaker button in Voicemail do any good the Voicemail has to be playing and then by the time you get to the speaker button, you’ve missed a good bit of the beginning of the message, or the whole thing if it is short. I’ve given my feedback to Apple,. Perhaps, if they hear about it enough, it will be changed in the next big update.

I get very few voice mails since I almost always answer my phone so for me the regular or simple voice mail that comes with my plan is enough. I could get visual voice mail for $2/month extra, but just don't find it necessary. If I tap on the Voice Mail tab on the bottom right of the Phone app I don't get the Inbox listing any voice mails I may have which I can then tap to play, I simply get a button which says "Call voice Mail" and if I double tap it it calls my voice mail. If I put the phone to my ear or cover the top of the phone with my hand and then take it away it automatically switches to speakerphone. I can also find the "Speaker" button and tap it if that doesn't work, if the keyboard comes up you may have to hide it just as on a phone call. I should say that I have simple voice mail, not visual voice mail. I am quite sure, however, that with visual voice mail there is a button to switch it to speakerphone as well if you can't get it to auto-switch, but try to cover the top of the phone where the earpiece is with your hand for a second or two and then take it away to see if that switches it. .
