Hi Rob, I don't think Apple puts something their USB wall adapters so you can only charge with them since my iPhone 4S charges just fine with anything I have. I have used any of my USB wall chargers from the one that came with my old HTC Smartphone to the one that comes with the Jambox speaker to a Belkin travel power bar which has a short cable, 2 outlets and 2 USB ports and all of them work fine to charge my 4S. I have even used a generic USB male to female extention cable and plugged my iPhone cable into it to make it longer and it worked as well.
