When it doesn’t talk, have you plugged in a headset to see if it is talking via the headset, it should be a wired headset. Most likely somehow the volume drops to 0%, if it talks on the headset make sure it’s unlocked and on the home screen, then unplug the headset and repeatedly press the volume up bugton, do this at least 6 or 8 times and see if you hear Voiceover.

I switched it off and on again and it said portrait and stopped talking again. I have checked that the speech is on and that the voice over is on and also that it is not muted. is there anything else I can do before I take it to a shop. the reason I know things are happening is that I am using a braille display and I can read what is on the screen.
