I have been doing a lot of research on this lately as my DT contract is about
to be up. A lot of it is going to depend on what you want to watch and how you
watch it. If you watch live or want to watch from a DVR. If you care about
described content or not. Here is what I have found so far, some of this might
also be controlled by local stations and what they are required to provide.

Spectrum TV
This seems to work well for watching live TV. It’s easy to access both on the
IPhone and Apple TV. It seems to provide SAP on most of the channels in my
area that provide it. No DVR, however you can watch “on Demand”, but have to
deal with ads and no SAP there. you can pair this with a traditional cable box
and via that watch DVR, but you can’t via the app.

DirectV Now
App on the IPhone works well, but on Apple TV you have to really work hard to
get any useful info out of the guide. Someone recently answered a question I
had here about that and they responded that the FireTV works better for the
guide, however you can browse via network and swith to the channel that way.
DTN gives you 20 hours of a cloud DVR. You can access that quite easily and it
works pretty well both on the IPhone and ATV. It allows you to skip
commercials and such. I have yet to figure out if SAP is available. In the
settings I have “English Descriptive” as the language, but don’t get anything
there.

YouTube TV
It was about a month ago I played with this one, so might not be correctly
anymore. This one did allow for SAP when you were watching the live feed, or
the DVR recording within a couple of hours of the actual broadcast. After a
short period the recordings seemed to swap to the “On Demand” version, and once
that happened you couldn’t skip commercials or get the SAP anymore. The
interface on the IPhone whas better than on the ATV, but again this was back in
Dec. so that might have changed.

Hulu
Also tried this with the live channels. Didn’t spend a lot of time with this
because the interface is still not the best. So, I got rid of it.

Most of these start around $40/month, eccept for the Spectrum TV which you can
get for about $25, but you are only supposed to get your locals and 10 channels
you choose. For some reason I was only limited on the cable box and via the
app had access to all channels. A call to Spectrum said that the system would
eventually sync that up.

I’d suggest that you download the apps and give them a whirl. Most of them
will give you 7 days free to try.

Hope this helps.
