I use my voiceover-enabled iPhone XS iOS 12.2 and HomePod a lot now that
Shortcuts are available. I’ve worked out, however, that my Siri Shortcuts
commands to “Play Radio BBC Radio 4” or other stations (set up via the Receiver
Radio app) which I use to get my HomePod to play streaming radio actually
simply gets Siri on HomePod to communicate with my iPhone, on which it starts
up the Receiver Radio app and gets the iPhone to airplay the sound to the
HomePod. Somehow, I feel a bit cheated that the HomePod cannot use Siri in the
cloud to do its own work - after all, Alexa can activate TuneIn Radio skills on
my Amazon echo without having to contact my iPhone first. When I first come
into the house, Siri Shortcuts will not work on my HomePod, on which Siri
protests that my iPhone must first be on the same Wi-fi network: when I check
in iPhone Settings, voiceover tells me my iPhone is already on my WiFi network,
but Siri Shortcuts will not cooperate until I open an app on my phone which
requires the internet. It also means that my iPhone has to remain close enough
physically to the HomePod for the streaming not to drop out - because, if I pop
upstairs, the HomePod simply stops streaming and, when I come down, I have to
use the Siri shortcut all over again!
Cheers
Harry
