When you go into the Updates tab of the App Store, touch the middle of the screen and do a 3 finger swipe down. This will refresh the list and show any new updates since the last time you checked. I do this regularly when going in the updates tab since some will show up on their own, but I found that many updates do not show up unless I manually refresh.
