When I hit the home button no matter which feed is playing, the audio drops
whether I lock the phone or not.

I have the same problem. What I do is go to the home screen and then lock
the phone and it doesn't affect the audio of the game.

Also this is about the screen locking; guess I could just touch it every
couple of minutes but would rather not have to.

I’ve experienced this bug ever since the iOS 6 update for this app came
out. As soon as one leaves the app by pressing the home button, the audio dies.
The one way I’ve gotten around it is by twice pressing the home button to get
to the app switcher and from there, press the home button to get to the home
screen. That way, the game’s audio feed continues to play in the background. I
reported this bug to MLB and they wrote me back over the weekend asking to
call, but I haven’t had time to do so.
