To each their own, I have mine set to lock after a minute because I would actually forget to do so. Unlike my Apple Watch, my iPhone doesn't lock itself while I am actually doing something. And it always says "screen dimmed" about 10 seconds before it actually locks so if I am about to do something else it only takes a quick flick or touch and it will stay unlocked for another 1 minute.

The battery drain isn't that bad especially if you have bluetooth off and wifi.
