I'm not sure why some people cannot hear the tones in Voice Dream Scanner, maybe it is the pitch, or the volume is not high enough, but Voice Dream Scanner does not need as much height as some apps. Both apps work fine even in poor lighting. With Voice OCR, if you gave it permission to use the microphone, you should be able to say, "capture, and have it take the photo, and then say "read" and have it recognize the text and read it to you. Both apps have a button to double tap and if you have the phone roughly as far above the item, as the item is tall, they should work. Though, as I said, Voice Dream Scanner can be a little lower. Perhaps get sighted assistance and have someone say when the document is in the camera view, until you can get the hang of it.
