I have done some more tesssting. First, I have to amend a statement I made
in the first message of this thread. I said the first time I tried to
change the cursor position, I altered it and closed the app via the app
switcher, and the new position was saved. I don’t think, in fact, that I
closed the switcher.

Here’s what I now believe to be true in all cases. If I open a document
and do nothing but change the cursor position and then close the app via
the switcher, the new position is not saved. On the other hand, if I open
the app and document, change the position, move away from the app by merely
pressing “home” and then later re-open Writer, I can change the cursor
position and close the app via the switcher, and the new position is
saved. All of this is done without making any changes to the text. This
makes no sense to me.

I am now thinking that my question is largely academic and prompted by
little more than curiosity. In the normal course of editing, worrying
about moving the cursor without making any textual changes to a document
might not have any practical advantage. In other words, maybe I am just
pursuing a question whose anser does not really make much of a difference
in how the application performs overall. Perhaps I should connect a
Bluetooth keyboard and then earnestly start using Writer as an editor
without worrying about an academic quibble..
